Communities in North Dallas see severe damage from Tuesday’s storms that slammed area

The communities north of Dallas have suffered significant damage from severe storms that struck the Metroplex on Tuesday morning.

NBC 5 crews have observed trees collapsing into homes, power lines being pulled down, and even a wall of a Plano church being torn off by strong winds.

The fierce winds ripped off a wall from Prestonwood Baptist Church in Plano, leading cleanup crews to urgently make repairs.

In Garland, neighborhoods were littered with debris from fallen trees, some of which crashed into people’s homes. David Chandler witnessed a tree falling onto his neighbor’s home on Ashley Drive in Garland.

“I heard a loud noise, like a ‘buh-boom,’ and it really scared me,” said David Chandler. “It looks like a bomb went off; we’ve never experienced anything like this here.”

The wind was forceful enough to lift Robert Sarver’s metal carport onto his roof.

“I knew it was the carport coming apart,” Sarver said. “There was a few seconds of hail, then the whole house shook, I didn’t realize the tree had fallen.”

“This is the worst I’ve ever seen, and I’m 89 years old; I’ve never witnessed it this bad before,” he added.

The post office at 3260 Saturn Road in Garland has been indefinitely closed after its doors and windows were blown out. The building’s roof also collapsed, causing the air conditioning unit to be thrown into the parking lot.

“I think initially the concern is the power outages, fallen trees, downed power lines, and property damage,” said Lt. Pedro Barineau of the Garland Police Department.

Garland police emphasized that recovery efforts would be ongoing as thousands of homes and businesses were left without power across the area.

They cautioned the community to remain vigilant against scammers offering fraudulent resources to victims and to be cautious of downed power lines and malfunctioning traffic lights.

“We’re thankful that there were no reports of injuries, but there’s still a long road ahead of us,” Barineau said.

Garland ISD has canceled classes for May 29 due to the power outages and storm damage. The district stated that it would provide families with updates on the remaining school year calendar as soon as possible.
