Police investigating after woman killed, suspect with baby shot himself in north Houston, HPD says

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — A tragic incident occurred in Independence Heights on Friday morning, resulting in the death of a mother. Houston police report that the woman’s child’s father shot and killed her during a dispute.

Authorities received a call around 8:45 a.m. and arrived at a home in the 700 block of E. 36th Street, where they discovered the woman’s body in the back of the house. The victim was identified by family members as 34-year-old Myanda Thomas.

Verna Hall, Thomas’ mother, expressed her disbelief, saying, “To get this call that she’s not here is like, ‘No way.’ ‘You’re joking.’ I just kept saying that this is a bad dream. This is a nightmare.”

Witnesses reported that the gunman’s family members were present in the home when multiple shots were fired. The gunman then took his and Thomas’ 2-year-old son and fled on a bicycle.

Officers spotted a man matching the suspect’s description less than two miles away, off the North Freeway frontage road. Before they could apprehend him, he shot himself.

“That’s another level of ‘I don’t care,'” Hall commented. “‘I don’t care about nobody but myself.’ I feel like, at that point, he was trying to take the easy way out. He killed her. He doesn’t want to go back to jail. He doesn’t want to face any consequences. Yeah, he’s a coward.”

The man was transported to the hospital and underwent surgery. His current condition is unknown. The child was found unharmed and is now with the gunman’s family.

Thomas’ family noted that she was a mother of two and was not in a relationship with the gunman, which had been a source of conflict. They mentioned that Thomas and the child’s father had previous altercations, but nothing as severe as this.

Thomas’ sister, Brian Smith, urged others to leave unhealthy relationships, saying, “If you know you are in something that is dragging your energy or is not good for you, please, please take my sister as an example and get out of it.”
