6-year-old and his grandmother suffer burns when downed line shocks them at Lake Conroe

CONROE, Texas (KTRK) — Nearly a week after being shocked and burned by a downed power line during last Tuesday’s severe weather, a 6-year-old boy and his grandmother remain hospitalized.

Nathan and Charlotte Winters were at the Lake Conroe campground, where Charlotte lives, when they encountered the live wire, according to family reports.

Morgan Winters, Nathan’s mother and Charlotte’s daughter, explained that her mother was pointing out the downed line to someone else from a distance when the incident occurred.

On Monday, interviewed Morgan Winters at the Texas Medical Center, where her loved ones are being treated. Nathan sustained second-degree burns covering 18% of his body, while Charlotte suffered more severe injuries, with burns covering 55% of her body.

Morgan Winters recalled the moment she learned about the incident, saying, “My mom had actually called me, but she wasn’t making sense.”

She believes that her son and mother were not close to the downed line. “Based on what she remembers and what we talked about, it’s not like they were within touching distance. They were far away based on what she has said,” Morgan Winters noted.

Despite her severe injuries, Charlotte uses what little energy she has to check in on Nathan. “She’s automatically like, ‘Morgan, how is Nathan? How’s my baby? How’s my baby?’ And they FaceTime multiple times a day,” Morgan Winters said.

During one of these video calls, Nathan saw his facial injuries for the first time and exclaimed, “Mommy, I am hideous.” Morgan reassured him, saying, “No, you’re just injured right now.”

During visit, Nathan was in better spirits and shared that his biggest motivation is reuniting with his grandmother. When asked what he looks forward to most after leaving the hospital, he replied, “Seeing my Nana.”

Emergency responders remind the public that the ground around downed power lines can be energized up to 35 feet away. Authorities have not disclosed how far Nathan and Charlotte were from the line when they were burned.
