Arlington police to release video of police shooting that followed welfare call

Arlington police announced plans to release footage on Tuesday of an encounter between officers and an armed individual who allegedly fired at them following a welfare call.

The Arlington Police Department stated on Monday their intention to unveil edited video footage captured from dashboard cameras and body-worn cameras during the May 20 shooting incident.

Arlington Chief of Police Al Jones is scheduled to present the video and address inquiries at approximately noon. A live feed of the news conference will be available at the top of this page.

Last month, police responded to a residence on Shady Valley Drive following reports from a family concerned about a relative’s behavior stemming from an argument regarding drug use. Although the individual in question conversed with officers, he was released as he had not committed any criminal offense.

Shortly after the interaction with law enforcement, Arlington police received reports of an attempted robbery in the vicinity, with the suspect matching the description provided during the welfare call. Subsequently, a 911 call indicated that the individual had returned home, discharged a firearm several times, and absconded with a truck. Police reported that the suspect fired shots at officers through the truck’s windshield, subsequently colliding with another vehicle. The armed individual fled the scene on foot and was eventually confronted by police outside a residence, where he was shot at least once.

On Monday, Arlington Police identified the suspect as 20-year-old Austin Taylor. Taylor, who was discharged from the hospital, faces multiple charges and has been booked into the Tarrant County Jail with bonds totaling $275,000. It remains unclear whether he has legal representation.

Police disclosed that both criminal and administrative investigations into the incident remain ongoing.
