County commissioner killed when a tree falls on his pickup during a tornado-warned storm

A tragic incident unfolded in Van Zandt County on Monday night as a tornado-warned storm swept through the area, resulting in the death of a county commissioner and injuries to his wife when a tree fell on their vehicle.

Expressing his grief outside his uncle’s home, Casey Melton described Virgil Melton, the Precinct 2 Commissioner, as a significant figure in his life, akin to a second father. Virgil Melton, 76, was driving near Farm-to-Market Road 279 near Edom at approximately 8 p.m. when the fatal accident occurred, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Virgil Melton, who had served two tours in Vietnam and had a distinguished career in law enforcement with the Dallas Police Department and the criminal courts in Dallas County, tragically lost his life in the incident. Casey Melton emphasized the unpredictability of life, reflecting on how such a simple occurrence as a fallen tree could have such devastating consequences.

Virgil Melton’s wife, Janice, 73, was also in the vehicle at the time and sustained critical injuries. She was transported to a hospital in Tyler, where her condition was reported to be stable on Tuesday morning. Details about her injuries remain unspecified.

According to family members, the Meltons were returning from their great-nephew’s softball game, which had been canceled, when the tragic accident occurred. Casey Melton expressed deep sorrow over the loss of his uncle and cherished the time spent together, conveying his love and gratitude.

The community mourns the loss of Virgil Melton and wishes Janice Melton a swift and full recovery from her injuries.
