One week later, Garland still cleaning up from destructive storm

It has been a week since the destructive storm hit the metroplex, causing significant damage, particularly in Garland. Mayor Scott LeMay is now working on issuing a disaster proclamation to facilitate access to resources for affected residents. This declaration will streamline the process for both the city and residents to seek financial assistance for recovery efforts.

Mayor LeMay emphasized the importance of cataloging the damage to assist in the ongoing disaster recovery. Despite continuous cleanup efforts, progress has been hindered by frequent rainstorms since the initial storm, slowing down the recovery process considerably.

The cleanup process has been particularly challenging due to the large amount of fallen trees and branches across Garland. Mayor LeMay described the scene in some neighborhoods as resembling areas affected by tornadoes, with extensive debris scattered throughout.

City crews have been diligently working to remove the debris, with a significant amount already cleared. However, there is still a substantial amount left to be addressed. Contract crews will soon join the efforts to expedite the cleanup process, particularly in areas with high debris accumulation.

In addition to cleanup efforts, the city has established a resource center in collaboration with a nonprofit organization and the Saturn Road Church of Christ. This center provides essential supplies, food, and connections to resources for residents in need, as well as opportunities for volunteering.

For residents still experiencing power outages, significant progress has been made in restoring electricity. However, some homes and businesses still face long-term outages due to direct damage to meter boxes or power lines. The city is expediting permits and inspections to facilitate the restoration process as quickly as possible.

Despite the challenges posed by the aftermath of the storm, the community remains resilient, with ongoing efforts to support affected residents and expedite recovery operations.
