Woman’s claim about 3 masked people leads to HPD opening fire at apartment complex, police say

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — A Houston Police Department officer discharged their weapon at an individual in an apartment complex on the city’s west side after a neighbor reported seeing three masked individuals via her Ring doorbell camera, authorities said.

The incident occurred at the Flats on Tanglewilde apartment complex, located at 2630 Tanglewilde St. in the Mid-West neighborhood. The shooting was reported at 3:30 p.m., according to HPD.

Initially, HPD reported that an officer had fired their weapon, striking a suspect.

An HPD spokesperson elaborated that the shooting took place on the second floor of the apartment building. Police are currently reviewing body-worn camera footage of the incident.

The suspect was shot in the leg and transported to the hospital, police confirmed.

During a news conference held a couple of hours after the initial report, police explained that the woman who noticed the masked individuals informed a relative and subsequently contacted HPD.

When two officers arrived, they were unaware of the presence of the relative, who then fired at the officers. The officers returned fire, injuring that person.

Police also noted that several apartments were struck by bullets during the exchange.

“It’s terrifying,” remarked Abby, a resident. She expressed concern over the building’s security, stating that entrances are often left unlocked, allowing easy access for anyone. “Anybody and everybody can get into our apartment complex, so it’s not really safe.”

Abby mentioned that with the intruders still at large, she intends to enhance her personal security.

“I’ll definitely be getting a Ring camera or some kind of camera,” she said.

Police have not provided further information regarding the masked individuals, including whether they have been arrested or are still being sought.
