Denton County Disaster Relief Center opens for residents impacted by tornado & storms

Residents of Denton County affected by the tornado that struck on May 25th or subsequent severe storms now have access to combined local and federal assistance services.

The Denton County Office of Emergency Management has established a Multi-Agency Resource Center at Butterfield Elementary School in Sanger. This center is a collaborative effort involving the county, various non-profit organizations, and FEMA.

At the resource center, residents can receive assistance in filing disaster claims with FEMA and the Small Business Loan Administration (SBA). Those impacted between May 25th and June 5th are eligible to apply for aid.

Numerous organizations, including The Salvation Army, American Red Cross, Legal Aid, and others, are participating in the resource center to provide additional support.

Furthermore, the United Way of Denton County has initiated a disaster relief donation fund. This fund aims to supplement financial aid not covered by FEMA or TDEM iSTAT, with up to $1,500 per household allocated for expenses such as prescription eyeglasses or medication damaged or lost in the tornado.

Denton County Commissioners have extended the Disaster Declaration for another week and approved mutual aid efforts at Butterfield Elementary School.

Samantha Taylor, Denton County’s director of emergency management, highlighted the devastation caused by the tornado, including damage to recreational vehicles at Lake Ray Roberts RV Park Marina and approximately 1,000 homes across the county.

The resource center aims to address individual needs comprehensively. Residents are encouraged to bring identification and a list of specific needs to tailor services accordingly.

Survivors like Frank Soltysiak and Amber, who shared their harrowing experiences, underscore the importance of community support during challenging times.

The Multi-Agency Resource Center in Sanger will operate from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. For further assistance and resources, residents are advised to contact relevant organizations or visit the designated centers.
