North Texas father and son are classmates in UTA’s MBA program

The University of Texas at Arlington boasts an enrollment of approximately 40,000 students, among them, a unique duo stands out.

“It’s been an incredible experience studying alongside my dad,” remarked Oswaldo Ortiz Jr.

Ortiz Jr. and his father, Oswaldo Ortiz Sr., are both enrolled in UTA’s MBA graduate program, forging a bond that extends beyond the typical student relationship.

“Yeah, I never expected this,” Ortiz Jr. admitted. “I suggested to my dad that we do it together. I thought it would be enjoyable!”

For Oswaldo Ortiz Sr., the decision to move his family from Mexico City to Grapevine in 2012 was rooted in the promise of greater opportunities in the U.S.

“I’ve been supporting my son from the sidelines since he was a baby, and now, I get to witness his journey firsthand,” Ortiz Sr. shared.

“He always sits right at the front of the class,” Ortiz Jr. joked. “I’m the one who prefers the back.”

Their dynamic extends to friendly competition over grades.

“We’re always pushing each other to excel academically,” remarked Oswaldo Sr. “He’s currently leading, but that’s alright.”

“It’s all in good fun,” added Oswaldo Jr.

In between the banter, there’s a palpable sense of pride shared between father and son.

“I get emotional watching him present, seeing him excel in class,” admitted Oswaldo Sr. “It’s truly remarkable!”

“As a son, making my family proud, especially as immigrants, means everything to me,” reflected Oswaldo Jr. “I owe so much to my dad.”

Their journey together isn’t just about academics; it’s about creating cherished memories.

“These moments of father-son bonding during our studies are priceless,” Oswaldo Jr. remarked. “I’ll treasure them for a lifetime.”
