Dallas man shares story of more than 300-pound weight loss in new book

In his office at Clark Dietrich Building Systems in Dallas, Rick Salewske maintains a reminder of his former self on the wall—a framed photograph dating back to 2001. This visual cue serves as a daily motivator, reminding him of his remarkable weight loss journey.

At his heaviest, Salewske tipped the scales at 538 pounds. Concerned for his health, his boss sponsored his enrollment in the Cooper Lean Program at Cooper Aerobics Center. Through dedication to healthier eating habits and regular exercise, Salewske shed an astonishing 300 pounds.

Now, over two decades and 334 pounds lighter, Salewske stands at a lean 204 pounds. Inspired by his transformative experience, he penned a book titled “Half the Man, Twice the Faith: The Rick Salewske Story.” While not a typical weight loss guide, the book focuses on motivation and faith, chronicling Salewske’s journey of shedding weight and finding spiritual renewal.

For Salewske, faith played a pivotal role in his weight loss journey. He attributes his success to a strengthened relationship with God, which helped him navigate challenges and maintain his resolve.

Although the COVID-19 pandemic presented new challenges, Salewske remained committed to his health goals. By cutting out sugar and unhealthy foods and maintaining his exercise routine, he regained control of his weight, all while entrusting his journey to a higher power.

Through his book, Salewske aims to inspire others facing their own struggles, offering them hope and encouragement to overcome obstacles. Despite facing financial constraints, he collaborated with a writer who shared his vision, resulting in the publication of “Half the Man, Twice the Faith.”

Salewske will be signing copies of his book at Cooper Fitness Center in Dallas on Friday, June 7th, from 10 a.m. to noon and again from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. The event is open to the public, with books available for purchase for $20.
