Mother of 14-year-old charged in Houston Farmers Market employee’s death turned him in, sources say

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — A 14-year-old accused of fatally shooting a Houston Farmers Market employee was reportedly turned in by his own mother.

The incident occurred just before 4:30 a.m. on Thursday on Airline Drive in the Greater Heights area.

Surveillance footage captured two suspects with hoods on approaching the building where the victim, 36-year-old Damon Price, was working. Price’s job was to check the delivery trucks arriving at the building.

According to the Houston Police Department, Price confronted the suspects after seeing them allegedly trying to steal a golf cart. A fight ensued, during which one suspect pulled out a gun and shot Price multiple times. Price was on the ground before being shot in the parking lot.

Both suspects fled the scene, and four shell casings were found.

On Friday, one suspect was taken into custody and charged with capital murder. He is currently held at the Harris County Detention Center. In an update on Saturday, sources told ABC13 that the suspect’s mother brought him to the police station downtown to turn himself in.

There is no official update on the second suspect, whose photos have been released by HPD.

Price’s family expressed their sadness over the suspect’s young age but emphasized the need for accountability.

“This happened while he was doing his job,” Price’s father, Leo Price Sr., said. “Really, ain’t nothing that can be said about a man going to work.”

The 14-year-old suspect is expected to make his first court appearance on Monday, June 10.
