HARRIS COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) — Authorities are investigating a shooting incident involving a 44-year-old man who was shot in the upper torso by a deputy in northwest Harris County on Sunday, according to Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez.
The incident occurred when officers responded to a welfare check call in the 9600 block of Halkirk just before 7 p.m. Deputies reported that the man became upset and held a gun to his head. They then made contact with him via cell phone.
The man later emerged from the house with a shotgun, and deputies instructed him to drop the weapon. One of the deputies, a 37-year-old with five years of service, fired shots at the man.
The wounded man was transported to a hospital and underwent surgery on his upper torso. Sheriff Gonzalez reported that the deputy involved did not sustain any injuries and will be placed on administrative leave.
