NBA Finals and millions in GOP donations mark first year of new Mavs owners

Earlier this Spring, Miriam Adelson stepped in to assist a prominent Texas politician embroiled in a challenging reelection battle. This move was part of a broader strategy to bolster allies advocating for the expansion of casino gaming in Texas. Through substantial donations, the establishment of a newly launched group, and the acquisition of a renowned Texas sports team, the Adelson and Dumont families are poised to wield significant influence in the state capitol next year.

The ongoing success of the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA championship against the Boston Celtics underscores the significant sway and access that a thriving professional sports team can afford lawmakers. Additionally, the families will leverage political contributions and profits generated from their Las Vegas Sands casinos. Miriam Adelson, continuing the legacy of her late husband Sheldon Adelson, intends to maintain their influential role as prominent Republican political donors.

Speaker of the House Dade Phelan, R—Beaumont, one of the most influential figures in Texas government, narrowly survived a heated primary runoff by a margin of less than 400 votes. Phelan and his coalition find themselves locked in a battle with ultra-conservative factions within the Republican caucus, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, who faced an impeachment attempt, and Lt. Governor Dan Patrick, the presiding officer of the Texas Senate.

Political science professor Cal Jillson of SMU highlighted the strategic use of abundant financial resources to support favorable candidates and counter challenges from opposing factions. Adelson-backed groups such as Texas Defense PAC and Texas Sands PAC allocated nearly $4 million to defend Phelan and allied legislators against contenders backed by Patrick, Paxton, and conservative oil magnates from West Texas.

Despite setbacks, the Adelson groups continue to advocate for their agenda through initiatives like the newly formed Texas Destination Resort Alliance, supported by funding from the Las Vegas Sands Corporation. The alliance aims to promote the benefits of resort casinos, including job creation and regulation of illegal betting.

Expanding gambling faces resistance in the Texas legislature, but recent developments, including the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling on sports betting and initiatives by influential stakeholders like Mark Cuban, indicate a shifting landscape. Plans for casino gaming have gained momentum, with proposals for sports betting and casino bills making significant strides in recent legislative sessions.
