New, affordable grocery store to open Wednesday in Southern Dallas

In southern Dallas, anticipation builds for the grand opening of Joe V’s on West Wheatland Road.

The scene is marked by vibrant red signage, gleaming grocery carts, and orange cones arranged for crowd management around the new grocery store, slated to open its doors to the public at 7 a.m. on Wednesday.

Althea Wiltz, a resident of the area, had the chance to preview the fresh produce and wide array of products aimed at addressing the food desert that has persisted in her neighborhood for years.

“I took a look around,” Wiltz remarked. “I’m really impressed!”

Wiltz noted that she typically needs to venture farther from home to find fresh and affordable produce.

“The prices here are fantastic,” she exclaimed. “I’m eyeing those watermelons, thinking I might need to grab more than I can carry!”

With enthusiasm, she observed as H-E-B executives, along with city and county officials, commemorated Joe V’s official debut with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

“The community has been in need of something like this; now they have a place to shop and dine after leaving church, work, or home,” remarked Tennell Atkins, Mayor Pro Tem of the City of Dallas.

Although Joe V’s operates under the H-E-B umbrella, it offers customers the same high-quality products found in larger stores.

“We’ve spent years studying the neighborhoods and understanding the needs of our customers,” explained Roxanne Orsak, Chief Operating Officer of H-E-B and President of Joe V’s.

Orsak highlighted the meticulous process of gathering insights from customers through home visits, shared meals, community engagements, and focus groups to tailor the store’s offerings.

“Our goal is to provide fresh and affordable options,” Orsak emphasized.

While Wiltz and others eagerly await the store’s official opening on Wednesday, she expressed satisfaction with what she has already seen.

“I wonder how long this will last? I want to make the most of it,” Wiltz mused. “It’s wonderful to have a caring community. It’s a privilege.”
