Texas families struggle to rebuild after May’s devastating storms amid ongoing FEMA delays

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Families in southeast Texas are facing significant challenges as they rebuild after May’s storms, particularly those who were already struggling.

The Romero family is currently staying in a motel.

“We’re 17 in total, and at the moment, we have to stay in the hotel,” said Ada Argueta. “A tree fell on the roof of our apartment.”

Their northeast Houston apartment was destroyed. Initially, they stayed despite the flooded floors, broken plumbing, and lack of electricity, but the heat eventually became unbearable.

Last week, they rented motel rooms.

“My feelings are up and down—depressed, sad, worried,” said Pedro Romero. “Mostly, we’ve been trying to pay for the hotel.”

The Romeros cannot afford the motel, as their income from selling candy is insufficient.

They have applied for FEMA assistance, but the process for application approval takes time, and they are still waiting.

“Honestly, I want a new house for them to relax and play like kids,” said Junior Romero, looking at his younger siblings and other relatives. “Not worry. I didn’t have much fun in my childhood—it was mostly chaos.”
