Discovery Green launches Art Lab mentorship program for Houston artists

HOUSTON, Texas — Houston is a city of art, not just because of its vibrant artist communities and world-class museums, but because art flourishes everywhere—in parks, on street corners, at airports, on university campuses, and even on skyscrapers. However, creating large-scale art installations is a skill that not every artist possesses. To address this, Discovery Green Conservancy recently launched Art Lab, a mentorship program aimed at providing underrepresented local artists with the skills and resources to create large-scale, interactive sculptural outdoor public works.

Since its opening in 2008, Discovery Green has welcomed over 30 million visitors and has established itself as a leader in presenting large-scale public art in the city.

“Public art has been at the heart of Discovery Green since its inception 16 years ago,” said Kathryn Lott, president of Discovery Green Conservancy. “The park has grown into an open-air gallery with a world-class permanent collection and remarkable temporary installations that draw hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.”
