23-year-old arrested, identified as suspect accused of shooting at deputy on Friday, Pct. 4 says

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) — Officials have identified a suspect accused of injuring a deputy constable during a series of robberies on Friday. Harris County Precinct 4 Constable Mike Herman’s Office announced on Saturday the arrest of 23-year-old Danthony Simms-Coleman.

The arrest follows an incident where Deputy Constable Deteryon Fontenot was shot at while responding to an armed robbery call that afternoon.

According to Precinct 4, Simms-Coleman, allegedly armed with an AR-15, committed thefts at two Academy Sports and Outdoor stores within an hour—one near Willowbrook Mall and another near Kuykendahl and the Grand Parkway.

Deputy Fontenot located the suspect’s car and attempted a traffic stop, but Simms-Coleman refused to comply, leading to a chase. The pursuit ended in the 5300 block of Slashwood Drive, where Simms-Coleman exited the vehicle and did not follow the deputy’s orders, subsequently shooting at Fontenot. The deputy returned fire and took cover after being struck.

Simms-Coleman then fled to a relative’s home, where multiple units responded and apprehended him.

Constable Herman reported that Deputy Fontenot’s patrol car sustained at least 16 bullet holes. Fontenot was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries to his face caused by bullet fragments and glass shards and has since been released and is recovering.

Simms-Coleman has been charged with first-degree felony aggravated assault of a public servant and is being held in the Harris County Jail. He also faces additional robbery and theft charges pending further investigation.
