Dallas County Health to take control of Garland Public Health Clinic

The City of Garland is transferring control of its public health clinic to Dallas County Health and Human Services (DCHHS) to prevent service reductions as grant funding runs out.

A city staff report presented at the June 18 City Council meeting indicated that while demand for clinic services is rising, the grants supporting this demand are ending. The remaining grant programs are not enough to maintain the clinic’s current operations.

The City Council unanimously approved the agreement, ensuring Garland residents can continue using the clinic during the transition.

“We are confident that DCHHS will continue to provide exceptional care to our community,” said Mistie Gardner, Garland’s managing director of health service, in a statement on Wednesday.

DCHHS assured that the transition will not lead to price increases for public health services. The organization plans to hire all current clinic employees and maintain the existing services, with intentions to expand health services, including chronic disease prevention and sexual health services.

“We are excited to provide these essential public health services to the Garland community,” said Dr. Philip Huang, Director of DCHHS, in a press release. “This transition allows us to leverage our resources and expertise to offer a wider range of high-quality public health services to Garland residents.”
