Dallas Animal Services offers $150 gift cards for large dog adoptions

Dallas Animal Services is facing a severe overcrowding issue and is offering incentives to encourage adoptions and rescues ahead of the Fourth of July holiday.

Currently, the animal shelter is housing 482 dogs in 300 kennels, with only two kennels remaining vacant. To alleviate the strain, Dallas Animal Services is providing a $150 Amazon gift card for the adoption of each of the next 150 dogs weighing over 40 pounds.

Mary Martin, assistant director at DAS, expressed concern over the anticipated influx of dogs frightened by fireworks during the holiday week. She emphasized the importance of pet owners ensuring their animals are microchipped or wearing ID tags. Additionally, Martin advised keeping pets indoors in a secure environment during fireworks displays and storms, and not leaving them unattended in the yard.

Martin acknowledged the challenges faced by animal welfare organizations during holidays like the Fourth of July, calling on the community to support their efforts by adopting large dogs in need of homes.

For those adopting larger dogs, the gift cards will be delivered via email after the pet has been settled in their new home for two weeks. Rescuers who take in dogs weighing 40 pounds or more will receive their gift card immediately as a token of appreciation.

“This initiative is our way of expressing gratitude for the community’s support and dedication to these animals,” Martin added.
