HPD: 1 dead, another hospitalized after fight over gambling debt in Alief park

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — A man was shot dead, and another was hospitalized following a fight at an Alief park on Saturday evening.

Houston Police Commander Trey Coleman stated that preliminary findings suggest the altercation, involving at least three men, stemmed from a gambling debt dispute on the basketball court at Alief-Amity Park near South Dairy Ashford Road.

One man was struck in the head with an object and transported to the hospital, where he is expected to recover. Another man was shot and killed, while the third suspect fled the scene. Police are working to identify the third man and determine if others were involved.

The incident was reported around 7:16 p.m. by a police officer who was providing security for a nearby party in the park.

Witnesses told ABC13 that the park is a popular spot for dominoes and card games and that the men involved in the fight were regular visitors.

Coleman mentioned that the debt that led to the argument was incurred that same evening and was not an outstanding issue.

Anyone with information is urged to contact the Houston Police Department.
