Cooling centers: Where to find relief in Houston as SE Texas under Heat Advisory over the weekend

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — The City of Houston is opening multiple cooling centers this weekend to help residents cope with the extreme heat.

A Heat Advisory is in effect for most of Southeast Texas until 7 p.m. Saturday, with heat index values expected to exceed 108 degrees. This heat wave is part of an intense start to the spring and early summer seasons.

In southern counties, flooding has severely damaged Matagorda’s W. Revetment Road, the only access to a public boat ramp, due to Tropical Storm Alberto. Authorities are also monitoring the Trinity River for potential dam failure, though there is no immediate threat.

Back in Houston, officials are urging those attending the downtown Pride Parade to prepare for the heat by bringing essentials like water, umbrellas, and cooling towels. The city has announced that Houston libraries, excluding the Central Library downtown, will serve as cooling centers during normal business hours on Saturday and Sunday. Select community centers will also be open starting at 10 a.m.
