Dallas Animal Services offers $150 gift cards for large dog adoptions

Dallas Animal Services is facing a severe overcapacity issue and is offering incentives to encourage adoptions and rescues ahead of the Fourth of July holiday, anticipating a surge in incoming dogs.

Currently, the animal shelter houses 482 dogs in 300 kennels, with only two kennels remaining vacant. To alleviate the strain, Dallas Animal Services is providing $150 Amazon gift cards for the adoption of the next 150 dogs weighing over 40 pounds.

Mary Martin, assistant director at DAS, expressed the urgency of the situation, noting the expected influx of dogs frightened by fireworks. She emphasized the importance of pet identification, recommending microchipping or using ID tags to help reunite lost pets with their owners.

“While we celebrate Independence Day, it’s a challenging time for animal welfare,” Martin said. “We anticipate a difficult week ahead and urge the community to channel their patriotic spirit by saving lives through adoption.”

Adopters of larger dogs will receive their gift cards via email after two weeks, while rescuers will receive them immediately upon adoption.

“We deeply appreciate the community’s support in helping these animals,” Martin added.
