Mom grieves as shooting suspect at large year after son killed in Midtown: ‘I just want answers’

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Over a year has passed since 22-year-old Javon Frazier was fatally shot in Midtown on June 18, 2023.

The Houston Police Department reported that the shooting occurred at 2121 Main Street around 11 p.m., but the suspect remains at large.

Frazier’s mother, Claudette Malone, spoke to from Virginia, expressing her heartache and desire for answers.

“It’s heartbreaking,” Malone said. “I just want answers. I just want to know what’s going on.”

Malone shared that her son had been living in Houston but planned to return to Virginia to be with family. On the night he was shot, Frazier was walking home from the gym. The Harris County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed that Frazier died from multiple gunshot wounds to his torso and extremities. Another man was also shot but survived.

Investigators have described the suspect as a man in a black hoodie and dark shorts but have not released additional details.

“It’s really disheartening,” Malone said.

Malone contacted over the weekend, frustrated that she had not heard from the Houston Police Department about her son’s case since January. After reached out to the department on Monday morning, a lieutenant called Malone in the afternoon to inform her that they had a suspect name and were still working on the case.

“I just want to get this killer off the street,” Malone said. “I don’t want them killing anyone else’s family member and getting away with it.”
