Great Flag Caper turns Irving red, white and blue for July Fourth

Nell Anne Hunt embodies the spirit of Independence Day much like Santa Claus does during Christmas. Every year, she mobilizes hundreds of volunteers who gather at her home in Irving to participate in a meaningful tradition: distributing American flags.

“Our theme is ‘We don’t live in America; America lives in us,'” Hunt remarked.

The Great Flag Caper, which Hunt initiated 32 years ago by placing flags in her neighbors’ yards, has now grown into a nonprofit organization. Today, it boasts about 300 volunteers who plant 40,000 flags across homes and businesses throughout Irving.

“I consider myself incredibly fortunate to have been born in this country, to have lived here,” Hunt shared passionately while placing flags along a bustling street. “I hope everyone realizes that under our flag, everyone is equal and every person is valuable.”

Thirteen-year-old Nicholas Crawford has been participating in the Great Flag Caper since he was a toddler.

“I want people to remember those who sacrificed their lives defending our country and securing our independence,” Crawford expressed. “Without independence, the United States wouldn’t exist.”

Volunteers will continue planting flags through Tuesday, July 3rd, culminating in a patriotic potluck celebration party.
