Temperatures are rising and so are COVID-19 cases in Texas

The summer surge of COVID-19 has arrived as numerous states, including Texas, report an increase in cases.

According to the CDC, COVID-19 infections are either growing or likely growing in 44 U.S. states and territories, with declines observed in 1 state or territory, and stability or uncertainty noted in 5 states and territories. This indicates the onset of an anticipated summer wave.

Recent CDC data shows that COVID-19 activity is on the rise nationwide, with Texas categorized as experiencing “growing” transmission. Although the CDC no longer tracks COVID cases directly, it estimates transmission trends based on emergency department visits, which have shown an increase. Both COVID deaths and emergency department visits related to COVID have risen in the past week. Hospitalizations have also increased by 25% from May 26 to June 1, according to the latest available data.

Dr. Ricky Williams, an ER Physician at Medical City, noted an uptick in COVID-19 patient visits, particularly at urgent care facilities.

“We’re seeing a rise in our numbers, ranging from an uptick to a surge,” Williams stated. “Increased contact among people, travel, and the summer vacation period, with children out of school, likely contribute to this increase.”

Earlier this year, the State Department of Health ceased requiring practitioners to report positive COVID-19 cases as a “reportable” condition. However, COVID-19 tracking systems remain in place, providing accessible data.

Steven Love, President and CEO of DFW Hospital Council, mentioned that his discussions with physicians align with the data trends. While he acknowledged COVID fatigue among the public, he emphasized the importance of remaining vigilant during the holidays to keep case numbers low.

“We understand people’s fatigue with COVID-19 discussions,” Love remarked. “Our message is simple: Stay vigilant during the holidays to help prevent an increase in cases.”
