Lionel Messi is on track to play for Argentina in Copa America vs. Ecuador at NRG Stadium in Houston

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Lionel Messi is set to make his return to the lineup Thursday night for Argentina’s Copa America match against Ecuador at NRG Stadium.

Messi, an eight-time Ballon d’Or winner, awarded to the world’s best soccer player, has been dealing with a persistent injury. However, recent reports from Argentine media indicate that Messi is ready to play.

The 37-year-old previously dazzled fans at NRG Stadium in 2016 when his remarkable curling free kick highlighted Argentina’s victory over the United States in Copa America.

In 2022, Messi, widely regarded as the greatest player of all time, led Argentina to its first World Cup title in 36 years with a thrilling win over France. During the final, Messi scored two goals and converted a penalty kick, securing the only major trophy that had eluded him.

Copa America presents another opportunity for soccer to shine in Houston. NRG Stadium is scheduled to host seven matches in the 2026 World Cup, including a knockout round match on July 4, one of only two World Cup matches to take place on America’s Independence Day.
