Dallas police investigate officer-involved shooting that left one man dead

A Dallas police officer shot and killed an armed man during a struggle early Thursday morning after responding to a robbery call at an alleged illegal gaming parlor, police say.

Dallas police spokesperson Kristin Lowman said police were called to a robbery in progress in the 2900 block of South Lancaster Road at about 1 a.m. As covert officers arrived, Lowman said three people ran out of the back door of an alleged illegal game room and jumped a fence. Other police officers responding to the robbery call confronted the three as they made it over the wall.

Lowman said the preliminary investigation showed one of the men pointed a gun at an officer and that during a struggle, the officer shot him.

Officers immediately provided first aid and called Dallas Fire-Rescue, Lowman said. The injured man was taken to the hospital, where he died from his injuries.

The other two people were taken into custody and were not injured. Lowman said no officers were injured.

Dallas Chief of Police Eddie Garcia was at the scene and is expected to share more details about the incident on Monday.

The Office of Police Oversight has been notified about the shooting. The Dallas District Attorney’s Office arrived at the scene Thursday morning and is expected to conduct an independent investigation into the shooting.

This is the third fatal shooting involving a Dallas police officer this year.
