A child and her grandmother are dead after the car the grandmother was driving crashed into a tree Sunday morning in Fort Worth.

According to Fort Worth fire officials, the woman was driving southbound on E. Lancaster Avenue when she struck a tree that was in the median.

The woman was later identified by the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office as 71-year-old Odessa Mickens.

Three of her grandchildren were inside the silver Honda SUV when the car crashed — their ages ranged from 5 to 16 years old

One of the passengers was a 12-year-old girl who was taken to the hospital where she later died. Mickens was taken to the hospital in critical condition and ultimately died.

The other two children were not seriously injured. The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
