Suspect in east Oak Cliff stabbing holds niece hostage during standoff, police say

An east Oak Cliff man barricaded himself in his home and held his toddler niece hostage after stabbing his brother-in-law early Tuesday, police said.

The girl was not hurt, KDFW-TV (Fox 4) reported. Police took the man into custody at his home in the 1500 block of Southerland Avenue. His name was not released.

The standoff began about 1:30 a.m. after the suspect allegedly stabbed his brother-in-law during a fight, according to Fox 4. Paramedics took the brother-in-law to the hospital from the home.

When police arrived, the suspect closed the door on them, the station reported, barricading himself inside the home. They observed the suspect holding a child through the window and because of the initial stabbing, treated the man as a barricaded person.

Fox 4 reported the man held his niece hostage, at one point holding a piece of broken glass to her neck as a threat. SWAT officers arrived to negotiate with the suspect, who surrendered about 3:15 a.m.

The man is likely to face charges of aggravated assault and child endangerment.
