Police cadet accidentally shoots two classmates at Texas City law enforcement school

A police cadet accidentally shot two other cadets when his loaded handgun went off in the middle of their law enforcement class Thursday night in Texas City, according to authorities.

The cadets were attending a class at the College of the Mainland Law Enforcement Training Academy when the weapon fired around 7:40 p.m., Texas City police spokesman Cpl. Allen Bjerke said in a written statement.

The cadet, identified as Clayton Whatley, was believed to be reaching into his backpack when the gun discharged, striking two classmates in their calves and grazing a third, Bjerke said.

The shot cadets were taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Whatley has not been charged at this time, police said, adding that the school is cooperating with the Texas City investigation.
