FIA says UK willing to give evidence in Imran Farooq murder case

ISLAMABAD: The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) on Tuesday informed an anti-terrorism court that the United Kingdom has in principle agreed to share with them evidence related to the murder of Muttahida Qaumi Movement leader Dr Imran Farooq.

FIA’s special prosecutor Khawaja Imtiaz told the ATC that the UK Central Authority had emailed to Pakistan’s attorney general office expressing willingness to provide evidence that may be used against the suspects facing trial in the Dr Farooq murder case.

The prosecutor, however, told the court that a formal letter in this regard was yet to be received and requested the judge to adjourn the proceedings till May 24.

Last year the Islamabad High Court (IHC) had directed the ATC to conclude the trial by October 2018.

However, the FIA had been seeking time from the trial court to produce evidence expected to be provided by the UK under the mutual legal assistance (MLA) request.

Special prosecutor Khawaja Imtiaz Ahmed argued before the IHC that the prosecution had laid the entire evidence before the trial court and it was waiting for the material evidence from the UK government.
