Severely emaciated stallion left tied to a tree in north Houston for at least a month, police say

Authorities believe a severely emaciated 9-year-old stallion that was found tied to a tree on a vacant lot in north Houston had been there for at least a month’s time before being rescued.

Officials with Harris County Precinct 1 Constable Alan Rosen, and animal cruelty investigators with the Houston Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) found the horse in the 800 block of Lovers Lane Thursday. Houston SPCA officials said the “extremely emaciated” horse was found with maggots in his front right hoof and a large sore on his back right leg.

The horse was transported to the Houston SPCA Equine Center to be examined by a staff veterinarian and will be slowly re-introduced to food.

Precinct 1 officials said the horse’s owner is unknown, but police believe someone had visited the horse after it was left there.

“We believe that horse was left there for at least a month, but it wouldn’t have survived a month without someone feeding it something,” Harris County Precinct 1 spokesperson Kevin Quinn said.

Anyone that may know the animal’s owner or who left it there is asked to contact the Houston SPCA animal cruelty hotline at 713-869-7722 or the Precinct 1 animal cruelty hotline at 832-927-1633.

If charges are filed, the owner or person responsible could face a charge of cruelty to livestock, a class a misdemeanor, that could result in up to one year in jail.
