Man shot in front of young daughter outside Midtown gym

A man is accused of opening fire from a wheelchair and striking a father in front of his young child outside a Midtown gym, according to police.

The masked man in the wheelchair believed responsible for the Father’s Day shooting critically wounded the 39-year-old from behind as he was putting his daughter into backseat of his car, police said

The shooting happened at a parking garage for the 24 Hour Fitness near Louisiana Street and Elgin Street.

The father managed to fight back during the 1 p.m. attack and knocked suspected shooter Joey Harper from his wheelchair, authorities said. Harper got back into his chair and wheel himself away as a witness followed him.

Police were called and they found Harper three blocks away as he tried getting into a friend’s vehicle.

Harper has not yet been charged in the shooting, according to court records. He was arrested for felony stalking in 2017 and robbery in 2009.
