Irving Police Chief Jeff Spivey is among the seven finalists interviewing this week for the job of Dallas police chief.
The candidates, who are vying to succeed Dallas Police Chief U. Reneé Hall, will be interviewed in a televised Q&A session Wednesday.

In addition to Spivey, the list includes Dallas Police Maj. Malik Aziz; Assistant Police Chief Avery Moore; Deputy Chief Reuben Ramirez; Albert Martinez, director of security at the Dallas Catholic Diocese; Charlottesville, Va., Police Chief RaShall Brackney; and former San Jose, Calif., Police Chief Eddie Garcia.
Spivey joined the Irving Police Department in 1988 as a police officer and worked his way up to chief of police in 2017, with experience spanning numerous departments, including patrol and criminal investigation.
As police chief, Spivey has worked to strengthen police relations with Irving’s diverse communities. This summer, Spivey announced that the department had fulfilled a pledge — the One Mind Campaign, launched by the the International Association of Chiefs of Police — to improve how it responds to people with mental illness.
On the department’s website, Spivey said the Irving Police Department “fully embraces the concept of procedural justice and its four tenets: respect, voice, transparency and equality.”
Dallas’ new chief will start in early 2021 and will likely be selected by the end of this month. In September, Hall announced that she would resign amid criticism from public officials over her leadership of the department.
