A public art installation may be headed for Park Village’s much-maligned water feature.
The centerpiece fountain, which has been out of order in the Southlake shopping center since its debut in 2015, was approved for a zoning change by city council in November.
Now, the governing body is considering options for further beautification. A front-runner for the site, which will now include a smaller fountain as well as an activity lawn to be finished by early summer, is a commissioned sculpture that would honor the location that was once an airport.
“Southlake’s Public Art program brings such a special feel to our community,” Mayor Laura Hill said in a release. “Working with the Arts Council to bring another incredible piece to one of Southlake’s most popular areas is exciting. That corner deserves a special piece that captures the spirit of our city and all it represents.”
During a joint meeting Jan. 27, Hill, city council and the Southlake Arts Council discussed art options and a timeframe for the installation.
Funding for the artwork will come from a public investment agreement with the property owner that uses sales and property tax from the development, according to city officials.
In November, Chicago-based ShopCore that owns the property began construction to modify the fountain area with completion for June, weather permitting.
A shade structure and “hardscape” materials, including pavers, will also be used in the area.
