Contagious disease prompts Humane Society of North Texas to halt dog adoptions

The Humane Society of North Texas will pause dog adoptions and intake of all animals for the next two weeks after dogs in its shelter tested positive for a highly contagious virus disease, the organization announced Thursday.

Dogs recently housed in its shelter tested positive for distemper, an incurable and often fatal disease that affects the respiratory, gastrointestinal and central nervous systems, the Humane Society said on Facebook.

No cases have been confirmed in animals currently in the shelter, but it will take the preventative steps while it provides medical supervision and care to the dogs in its care, it said. Any dog showing signs of upper respiratory illness will be tested for distemper.

Cat and other small animal adoptions will remain open.

Based in Fort Worth, the Humane Society also has locations in Keller, Benbrook and Lake Worth. It urged pet owners to make sure all pets are current on required vaccinations.

“Vaccines are very effective and important to protect your pet from distemper,” the organization said.
