Garland ISD will offer free breakfast, lunch to all students in 2021-2022

Garland ISD will offer all students access to free breakfast and lunch every school day during the 2021-22 academic year.

Per guidance issued by the U.S. Department of Agriculture in April 2021, schools are permitted to offer free meals to all students regardless of household income in the 2021-2022 academic year, according to a Garland ISD release.

Typically, school districts are only reimbursed for free meals served to students who qualify for and participate in the USDA’s National School Lunch Program. In October 2020, 68.63% of Garland ISD students qualified for free or reduced lunches.

Although no application or eligibility determination process is required for students to receive free meals this school year, income eligibility requirements will likely resume in 2022-23, according to the release.
