Plano police honor kindergartner who dreams of becoming an officer one day

A kindergartner served as an “honorary recruit” for the Plano Police Department following a social media post of him saying he dreams of becoming an officer one day.

In a Nextdoor.com video, KJ Scroggins, 5, was shown telling his grandparents that he wants to be a police officer when he grows up, the police department wrote in a Facebook post.

Officer Sean White, a recruit training coordinator, spotted the message and invited KJ to visit the police academy. He had the chance to “train” with several different units, including the bomb squad, K-9 unit and drone team, according to the post. He also rode in a SWAT vehicle and toured the police department.

The experience has changed KJ’s life, KJ’s grandmother Denise Hamilton who originally posted the video told KXAS-TV (NBC5).

“He came in at the end of the night and hugged me and he said ‘Nana, this was a best, best day ever,” she told the station.

Because of the success with KJ, planning is underway for a junior career day for other children in the community, according to NBC5.
