HISD students plan walkout as investigation launches into state-appointed superintendent Mike Miles

Amid mounting allegations, demands for the resignation of Houston ISD Superintendent Mike Miles are intensifying.

The latest uproar revolves around a Spectrum News report accusing Miles of diverting funds to charter schools located out of state. The Texas Education Agency (TEA) has pledged to launch an investigation into the matter.

Miles, appointed to his position by TEA Commissioner Mike Morath, stated that he welcomes the investigation and hopes it will bring clarity to the HISD community.

Jessica Campos, an HISD parent, expressed her frustration, stating that concerns about the district’s state have reached a tipping point. She highlighted the need for action, emphasizing that parents are increasingly vocalizing their dissatisfaction.

The push for Miles’ resignation comes just a year after his appointment, with various issues contributing to the upheaval.

While Miles vehemently denied the allegations in the Spectrum News report, calling it inaccurately irresponsible, TEA’s response seemed to both acknowledge the need for investigation while also providing some defense for Miles.

Despite the controversy, parents and students are more concerned about budget cuts, layoffs, and school restructuring. Helen Repass, an HISD school attendee, criticized the overhaul of teaching methods, describing them as ineffective and not conducive to learning.

Repass is among numerous students planning to stage a walkout on Friday as part of the “Students Against Mike Miles” movement, expressing their discontent and demanding accountability for their future. Campos commended the students for their activism, underscoring the importance of their voices in shaping their education and future.
