Suspect still at large after shooting that wounded toddler outside grocery store in Denton County

The suspect in a Thursday-afternoon shooting that wounded a toddler remained at large on Friday, Little Elm police said.

Police said the shooting took place just after 2 p.m. Thursday outside a grocery store at Rose Lane and King Road in Hackberry. Little Elm provides police services for the small Denton County town on the east side of Lewisville Lake.

According to police, a woman, her child and her sister were stopped at the store when the sister’s boyfriend drove up and shot at their vehicle multiple times.

The toddler, who was struck in the leg, was taken to a hospital and was stable, police said.

Police identified 25-year-old Demetrius Davis of Richardson as a suspect and said that he and the sister had been in an argument earlier in the day.

Little Elm police and other law-enforcement agencies were looking for Davis, who they said fled the scene after the shooting. About 4:30 p.m. Thursday, police said he had been seen at a home in Irving.

On Friday, police said a vehicle used in the shooting had been recovered but that Davis was still at large.

Little Elm ISD briefly put three schools on lockdown as a precaution during Thursday’s manhunt. Those lockdowns were lifted shortly after 3 p.m.
