COVID-19 cases climb in Grand Prairie; here’s what you need to know

The total number of COVID-19 cases in Grand Prairie has reached 27,526 since the pandemic began last year, an increase of 822 over last week.

Grand Prairie has recorded a total of 292 deaths COVID-related deaths, including a woman in her 30s this week who had no underlying conditions, according to the Dallas County Health Department.

Hospitalizations may be beginning to plateau in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, according to the DFW Hospital Council. The 19-county area that includes Dallas-Fort Worth has seen about 3,500 patients hospitalized daily with COVID-19, and as case numbers drop, hospitalizations for the disease are expected to fall, council CEO and president Steve Love said Tuesday.

Grand Prairie is located mostly in Dallas and Tarrant counties, with a small portion in Ellis County. Dallas County updates case numbers for cities Tuesday and Friday and does not report which cases are considered active or recovered.

Here’s more about how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected Grand Prairie, including information about testing and schools.

Schools

Since returning to school Aug. 11, 669 students and 184 staff have tested positive for COVID-19, according to the district’s dashboard.

Of those cases, 173 students and 37 staff have active cases.

The district implemented numerous COVID-19 protocols, including frequent classroom cleanings to health assessments. Masks are optional.

Testing

Numerous COVID-19 testing sites are available throughout the city. Check here for a complete list.

If you need help

As the economic ramifications of the pandemic continue to take a toll on many Grand Prairie residents and businesses, the city is also offering residents several options for relief.

Those options include rental and mortgage assistance and expanded property tax exemptions, among other forms of assistance.
