Texas lawmaker Rafael Anchia latest Democrat to back Joe Biden for president

State Rep. Rafael Anchia is the latest North Texas Democrat to back Joe Biden for president.

The Dallas Democrat had previously endorsed former San Antonio mayor and former Housing Secretary Julián Castro for president. He tossed his support to Biden after Castro dropped from the race.

Anchia is one of 11 Texas Democrats that backed Biden on Monday. Of that total, nine had been supporters of Castro, according to aides for Biden’s Texas campaign.

Castro has endorsed Elizabeth Warren for president.

Dallas Rep. Rafael Anchia, chairman of the Mexican-American Legislative Caucus, is one of the Democrats calling on Gov. Greg Abbott to order a special legislative session for addressing gun violence. The news conference Wednesday was one of five organized across the state a day after Republican lawmakers said they'd be appointing select House and Senate committees to study the issue.

Biden’s latest Texas list includes state Reps. Ryan Gullien of Rio Grande City, Eddie Lucio III of Brownsville, Oscar Longoria of Mission and Armando Martinez of Weslaco. The former vice president also got the support of Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff, Bexar County Commissioner Justin Rodriguez and former state Sen. Leticia Van de Putte of San Antonio.

The March 3 Texas primary could be a pivotal point in the Democratic Party race for president and candidates have started mobilizing supporters and volunteers.
