The weirdest and craziest state laws in the history of the Texas Legislature

The 86th Texas Legislature didn’t get too crazy.

On June 16, the deadline for Gov. Greg Abbott to veto bills that had passed the Texas House or Texas Senate came and went

Some of the bills Abbott signed into law were put forward by both parties and tackled a wide range of issues. Other laws that came to be under the 86th Texas Legislature, however, came after contentious battles that were often fought along party lines.

Abbott also vetoed over 50 bills, the full list of which can be seen here.

But since Texas renounced its independence and joined the United States, the state and its people have often taken pride in the area’s somewhat-unique culture.

And the previous 85 Texas legislative sessions have certainly produced some colorful laws that vary from humorous to sad to downright disturbing. Cities and towns have also created and passed laws and ordinances that might make you wonder if you’re in the middle of an elaborate hoax.

Yes, some of the laws that people speculate about are actually just myths or tall tales.
And while many of the more outrageous, confounding or strange laws in and around the state have been replaced or repealed, others have not.
