With temperatures blazing in the triple-digits, it’s hard to imagine anyone would be anxious about sitting in a blind at water’s edge or on a boat hunting waterfowl. However, the Trinity River National Wildlife Refuge is already accepting applications for a public waterfowl hunt with an approaching deadline of Sept. 3.
Officials emphasized applications must be postmarked by Sept. 3. Any applications received before or after those dates will not be accepted.
“If selected through a lottery drawing, you will be able to hunt waterfowl for two consecutive weekends on Champion Lake during the regular waterfowl season,” said Stuart Marcus, Refuge Manager for the TRNWR.
Marcus encouraged hunters to review the application instructions before they fill out the application form.
According to a release from TRNWR, access to the hunt area is by boat (10 hp or less) only. Twenty hunters for each two weekend slots totaling 100 permits will be drawn. Hunters may list November, December, or January in any priority order they want. If no priority is listed when drawn, hunters will be placed in the first available slot for two consecutive weekends.
