Shooting suspect led Dallas officers on chase before crashing with small child in car, authorities say

A shooting suspect was arrested early Monday after he led officers on a chase from Pleasant Grove while he had a small child in the car, Dallas police say.

Maj. Israel Herrera said that shortly after police were called to the 6800 block of Barrett Drive, near C.F. Hawn Freeway and Lake June Road, at about 4:20 a.m., officers learned the suspect had shot someone, grabbed his child and got into a car, according to KXAS-TV (NBC 5).

Herrera said police spotted the car leaving the scene of the shooting and began chasing it. The driver eventually crashed on westbound I-30 near Ervay Street, he said.

The child is OK, Herrera told KXAS-TV. He said there was “no time at all” for an Amber Alert to be issued.

The victim, who is the suspect’s father-in-law, suffered multiple gunshot wounds to his lower extremities and was hospitalized. He was in stable condition Monday, Herrera told reporters.

The names of the suspect and the victim were not released.

The child, whom police described as an infant, was not injured but was taken to Children’s Medical Center as a precaution.

Herrera told KXAS-TV that detectives were interviewing the suspect Monday.
