Tony Romo’s new contract with CBS makes him the highest-paid NFL analyst in TV history

If professional football made Tony Romo wealthy, calling NFL games from the booth will make him absurdly wealthy.

At least if reports regarding his new contract with CBS are true.

The former Dallas Cowboys quarterback is set to become the highest-paid NFL analyst in television history, per Andrew Marchand of the New York Post. Romo’s new contract was later confirmed by The Washington Post.

Romo, whose initial three-year contract with CBS ended after the 2019-2020 season, will re-sign with the network for $17 million per season. The deal is reportedly for more than five years.

For some perspective, Romo made $17 million or more in a season only three times during his 14 years in the league (2007, 2013, 2015), per OverTheCap.com. Given his new salary, Romo will need to commentate games alongside Jim Nantz for just under 7.5 seasons to eclipse the $127,422,458 he made during his playing days.

With this $17 million sum, Romo would become the first sports analyst to score an eight-figure contract. His previous contract was worth $4 million per year.

Other networks had interest in luring Romo away from CBS, including ESPN. After his former teammate Jason Witten left the network’s flagship Monday Night Football broadcast team after one season, ESPN was reportedly willing to offer Romo a sizable amount.

CBS reserved the right to match any offer made to Romo by a competitor, and is ultimately giving him a raise. Romo’s representation, Creative Artists Agency, initially asked for $10 million per season.

Romo’s new deal laps the top figure broadcast legend John Madden once made. Madden’s annual salary peaked at $8 million per season.
