Dallas County reports 1,174 coronavirus cases, 2 more deaths

Dallas County health officials reported 1,174 new coronavirus cases Sunday and two more deaths.

The latest victims were two Dallas men: one in his 60s and one in his 80s who had lived in a long-term care facility. Both men had underlying high-risk health problems and had been hospitalized.

Sunday is the 10th straight day the county has reported more than 1,000 new cases.

The county has documented 33,800 cases of the virus, or about 12.8 cases for every 1,000 residents. Dallas County has seen 451 deaths, about a third of which are associated with long-term care facilities.

Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins urged people to “take responsibility” and help stop the surge of coronavirus cases from climbing higher.

“You focus on the micro-level, and by that I mean focus on your family and your circle, and let our team focus on the macro-level,” he said in a written statement Sunday. “We can do this, North Texas, but it takes all of us.”

An increasing share of COVID-19 cases in Dallas County are being diagnosed in people who are 18 to 39 years old. Half of all cases reported after June 1 fall in that age group, health officials said. The county is also seeing more cases associated with large social gatherings, including house parties.

New data for hospitalizations, emergency-room visits and intensive-care admissions — which officials use as key metrics to track the outbreak — were not available Sunday because of delays in weekend reporting, the county said. Updated numbers are expected Tuesday.

Testing sites
Gov. Greg Abbott announced Sunday that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has extended federal support for coronavirus testing at Community Based Testing Sites in Dallas and Houston through the end of July.

“Texas is committed to providing ample testing resources as we work to contain the recent surge in COVID-19 cases,” the governor said in a written statement. “Our continued collaboration with our federal partners is essential to our efforts.”

The latest victims included a woman in her 50s, a woman in her 60s and a man in his 70s, all from Fort Worth, and a man in his 70s from White Settlement. They all had underlying health problems, officials said.

The county has reported a total of 18,161 cases of COVID-19, 272 deaths and 8,186 recoveries.

As of Sunday, Tarrant County reported there were 694 people confirmed to be hospitalized with the coronavirus.

Collin County
Collin County reported 74 new coronavirus cases Sunday, bringing its total to 4,533.

No new deaths were reported, so the county’s toll stood at 56.

The county also reported that 215 people were hospitalized with the virus, and 3,613 people have recovered.

Denton County
Denton County Public Health reported 112 new cases Sunday, putting the county’s total at 4,049. The number of deaths remained at 40.

The county also reported 103 newly recovered cases of COVID-19, increasing its total to 1,602.

Other counties
Reporting for other North Texas counties has been taken over by the Texas Department of State Health Services. Their latest totals are:

Ellis County — 1,604 cases, 20 deaths
Johnson County — 788 cases, four deaths
Kaufman County — 971 cases, five deaths
Rockwall County — 458 cases, 17 deaths
