Garland ISD postpones summer graduation ceremonies amid COVID-19 pandemic

As COVID-19 cases continue to climb around the state, Garland Independent School District has postponed summer graduation ceremonies.

Previously slated to take place on Aug. 6, the graduation will now have to wait until a still undecided date after Sept. 7, the district said on its website, citing current orders that restrict the district from holding in-person activities.

The district held its spring graduations in June following social distancing guidelines.

The announcement said that Garland ISD understands the importance of graduation, but that the safety and security of students and staff remain a top priority. The district added that more information about graduation plans will be released in the coming weeks.

“We will also be asking for feedback regarding alternate plans to commemorate this momentous achievement,” the statement said.

If graduates need documentation of meeting all graduation requirements, they can contact their campus.

The delayed graduation is just one of the areas the school is making changes due to the coronavirus.

Although the 2020-2021 academic school year will launch on Aug. 10, the district will hold all courses online for the first four weeks. Students and parents will be allowed to choose between in-person instruction and e-learning for the remainder of the year.
