18-year-old arrested in fatal shooting of actor Eddie Hassell in Grand Prairie, police say

An 18-year-old was arrested Wednesday in connection with the fatal shooting of actor Eddie Hassell in Grand Prairie earlier this week, police said.

Police said D’Jon Antone was jailed on a capital murder charge.

Hassell, 30, was found wounded about 2 a.m. Sunday in the 3000 block of West Bardin Road. He later died at a hospital, police said.

The Corsicana native was known for his roles in the film The Kids Are All Right and the TV show Surface.

A representative for Hassell had told Variety that the shooting appeared to have been connected to a carjacking. Police said a car taken from the scene of the crime was later recovered. They called the shooting a “random robbery.”

According to an arrest-warrant affidavit for Antone, Hassell had been staying at an apartment in Grand Prairie. Before the shooting, he had left the apartment to go to a car that belonged to someone he was staying with, according to the affidavit. The car, a Nissan Sentra, was later reported stolen.

Surveillance video from the apartment complex showed the stolen car fleeing after the shooting, according to the affidavit.

Police said in the affidavit that a Grand Prairie detective spoke with several witnesses, including one who was present during the shooting, who said Antone shot Hassell and stole the car.

Antone was being held in the Grand Prairie jail with bail set at $500,000, police said Thursday. Police said Antone is a Dallas resident, but the affidavit lists an Arlington address for him.

Crime Stoppers has offered up to $2,500 for information that leads to an arrest, and tips may be submitted anonymously at 972-988-8477.
