19-year-old arrested in fatal shooting of man in west Oak Cliff during drug deal, police say

A 19-year-old man was arrested Monday in the fatal shooting of another 19-year-old in west Oak Cliff, Dallas police said.

Armando Limon Gutierrez is suspected of killing Jose Hernandez in the early hours of Monday morning, police said.

Officers were called about 1:30 a.m. to the 1200 block of McLean Avenue, where witnesses reported that the pair fought over a gun before the shooting, police said. Hernandez was taken to a hospital, where he died.

Hernandez’s brother told police that the victim and Limon were on the porch engaged in a drug deal when he heard a single shot, then saw his brother on top of Limon trying to wrestle a handgun away from him, according to an arrest-warrant affidavit.

Hernandez’s father came outside and grabbed the gun, and Hernandez said he’d been shot.

Limon then went to his car and grabbed an assault-style rifle, police said. He pointed it at the family and demanded the handgun, then picked up cash and marijuana he had dropped before leaving, the affidavit says.

That evening, Limon’s brother told police his brother had admitted to being involved in the shooting, the affidavit says. Officers took Limon into custody at his home and took him to police headquarters.

In an interview with detectives, Limon said he’d gone to the home to buy marijuana and that Hernandez had pulled a gun on him, the affidavit says. He said he was able to point the gun back at Hernandez and fire a shot, according to the affidavit.

Limon is being held at the Dallas County jail on a capital murder charge. His bail is set at $500,000.
